2019’s Top Trends in Medical Aesthetics

Medical aesthetics patients, like most consumers, are often attuned to the latest trends, from fashion, to beauty, to media, and more. As a medical aesthetics provider, you’ve likely taken note of this when considering trends in the kinds of treatments patients request. Generally speaking, celebrity looks, influencer recommendations, social media images, and of course, treatment innovations all help to shape consumer demand. Many of these trends are just a flash in the pan, but there are some that stick. So how do you determine which trendy aesthetic treatments are worth adding to your clinic’s services ?

Starting with statistics, particularly from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ (ASPS) 2018 statistics report , is a smart first step.

Top Medical Aesthetics Statistics to Consider

In 2018, 15.9 million minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were performed in the U.S. by members of the ASPS: That’s nine-times higher than the number of surgical procedures performed. In fact, demand for minimally invasive procedures is projected to continue to grow, up 228% since 2000 while surgical procedures have dropped five percent in the same period.

Botulinum Toxin A procedures numbered 7.4 million in 2018: Despite the effects being temporary, repeat patients are likely with an average fee of $397 per treatment. As a side note, these treatments are fairly quick to administer and are popular among millennials seeking “ prejuvenation ” solutions.

Augmentation using fat grafting rose 19% year-over-year: Fat grafting, which refers to the extraction of one’s fat from an area of the body to be injected elsewhere for contouring purposes, is gaining in popularity, particularly for the buttocks. In fact, fat grafting appears to be replacing implants, according to the 2018 ASPS survey.

Women account for 38.2% of non-surgical hair restoration procedures: Advances in treatment technology appear to be increasing interest in minimally invasive hair restoration treatments , particularly using the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique. Often considered a treatment that traditionally appeals to males alone, female patients continue to be a growing demographic among hair restoration patients.

PRP and facial fat fillers were the highest-trending treatments: Showing the most dramatic rise in demand, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and fat facial fillers rose 12% and climbed 16%, respectively, year-over-year. While this may be a result of all the media attention these options have garnered, there are certainly many proven benefits to opting for solutions like these.

The Bottom Line

These are just the surface of today’s biggest aesthetic trends. Identifying and analyzing the full picture when it comes to treatments with potential for growth and longevity is crucial, so that you can attract the right consumers and properly position your practice as the go-to provider for the most in-demand therapies.
